There’s a Sandhill Crane in the cattails A Swallowtail Kite on the wing A Yellow Throat Warbler with his heart in a song Must be the first of Spring Down home on the Withlacoochee The cypress trees reach to the sky Home on the Withlacoochee That tea-stained river paradise is mine Old Green Swamp had an only daughter She left home, headed north through hills of sand Capturing my heart the first time that I saw her As she rippled, sparkled, danced across the land Down home on the Withlacoochee In the shade of a grandad live oak tree Spend my time danglin’ crawfish from a line Makin’ friends with that river bottom breeze On a quiet bend of sand with the damsel flies and darners I watch the cooters slidin’ off of their logs Spooked by some bull gator with his eyes as dark as sin That take the measure of a man so don’t fall in Home on the Withlacoochee Sit yourself down beside a cypress knee Home on the Withlacoochee Toss in your line and spend some time with me As the evening sun goes down, and the river mist is rising Chorus frogs and Barred Owls start their songs And I’ll fry up some catfish, we’ll eat Cracker haute cuisine Then its hammock time and sweet gum maple dreams Home on the Withlacoochee Got a moonbeam ticklin’ my eye Home on the Withlacoochee That tea-stained river paradise is mine Copyright, 2007, by Walt Leuzinger

you know I’ve traveled down your road seems like twenty thousand times and I’ve come to love that oak tree and those carolina pines and your voice still gives me comfort when I’m down or all alone so how can I believe that you could leave while I’m still safe at home well I guess it was your vision must have given you your fame but those bright lights drew you closer like a moth into a flame you knew the city of the angels was a devil to the bone but in a cosmic trance you took a chance like you were still safe at home it wasn’t an earthquake or the Lord’s burning rain but you found your trouble all the same now it hasn’t been a hundred but its more than 30 years since the wind was sweet with hickory and the angels dried their tears now your voice still gives me comfort hope you know I’m not alone when I say you paved the way but I wish you were still safe at home still safe at home copyright,2000 by walt leuzinger

about

The Porch Pickers’ second release,“Dixie Moon”, is a fresh take on
the traditional roots music of the American south. Featuring former
Gram Parsons' Fallen Angels Band pedal steel player Neil Flanz,
singer/guitarist Mark Holland, and musician/songwriter Walt
Leuzinger, the band’s old timey style borrows generously from
depression-era blues, gospel, jazz and folk genres. The trio pays
particular homage to 1930’s country music legend Jimmie Rodgers
by seamlessly sprinkling four gems from his iconic catalogue
among their eight originals.

The themes explored here are pure and unpretentious, mostly
gathered from the lives of the people of a bye-gone era of the rural
south who worked and wandered in the great cypress filled river
bottoms and grassy deltas; people who lived in one room log
cabins or tar paper shacks in the shadows of turpentine stills,
textile factories and great antebellum mansions. It is their stories
of home that give voice to the timeless songs of love, longing,
despair, and redemption that are at the heart of “Dixie Moon”.

Dedicated to the loving memory of Mark Holland
